My alien overlord is huge, all-powerful, and determined to claim me.

Every human girl growing up on New Terrhan knows one thing … that she will be taken by one or several Xalthurian males when she turns twenty-one. The Xalthurians are rough, domineering, and huge all over, but this is the deal our leaders struck so that they would provide our human colony with desperately needed supplies.

If the baby born from our taking is a girl, we will be allowed to keep it. If the baby is a boy, it will be taken away, never to be seen again. That is the way it has always been on our small planet and that is the way it will always be.

I should accept my fate, but I can’t. When they come for my sister’s baby boy, I dare to defy the alien, they call “Tel.” As it turns out, “Tel” means prince. But rather than killing me for my insolence, the future overlord vows to return to the planet. When I am twenty-one.

He’s huge, all-powerful, and determined to claim me.

Can I stop him?

And how will I answer when the question becomes, do I want to?

"When I became obsessed with romance novels about 10 years ago, all I wanted to read about was Black love ( still true!). Then I was introduced to IR, and decided that as long as a Black or Brown girl is being loved and adored, I didn't care who the man was. But y'all, never did I ever think I would even entertain the idea of reading a love story with an alien. An alien?! Naw. Nope. Not for me. Then I discovered (and fell in love with) Theodora Taylor. And she has taken me from wolves to dragons and now to aliens. And I'm loving every minute of it.

Loved every minute of this one and can't wait for the next book in the series. Don't miss it!!!"

  • I just did not like the society the hero came from. Basically, to help the human colony with food they force every woman 21 years of age into a "breeding" session (aka rape) once a year and once the women are bred, a year later the aliens come back and take all the male born children. The heroine is now 21 and the hero wants to breed her. He takes her back to his planet and she "teaches" him about love and negotiates a new deal with him for her people. I didn't feel genuine love between these two. She's just a victim of Stockholm Syndrome and he's just an abusive bully. The scene where he sexually punishes her, really bothers me. I don't like men who use sex to humiliate or abuse. It's not attractive and it is not love.

Some plots like this can be too edgy. Forcing 21 year old women to breed, which is just rape and then forcing them to give away their newborn baby boys and never see them again, does not produce loving, genuine feelings. I could not imagine in any way, loving a guy who can participate in that or endorse it. While the hero does not technically "force" the women (he does ask permission to have sex with her), but honestly she is in no way equal to him in power, resources, or anything so while she might give permission, I still felt it was coerced permission. It was more like statutory rape. She was not in a position to actually deny him (cause these aliens don't take denial well) so if you can't actually refuse, can you then actually consent. I don't think so. Kinda permission by duress.

If you like plots with rape and forced breedings, then this is the series for you. But if you find that kinda hard to stomach, steer clear.

So, Kira is human on a planet that was on the brink of starvation. In order to get assistance, the town council makes a treaty with an alien species experiencing infertility. In exchange for resources, each year, they force all women who have turned 21 to go with them for 3 hours to "breed". The women are put in a room with males, raped, and impregnated. After they give birth, if it's a boy , they are taken from the mothers forever.

The aliens think the humans are inferior in every way, except for their ability to "breed". The aliens run simply on logic and refrain from emotional interactions and consideration.

So, in comes Kira (Human) and D' Rek( Alien King). He develops an obsession with her after a fatal encounter with her sister. He eventually takes her from her home with the intent to breed and learns about love and different sexual positions. I have two major concerns about this book.

    1. This book tries to redeem rapists. Rape ISN'T hot. It tries to redeem itself by Kira teaching D'Rek about consent. However, Kira isn't in a position to consent because she doesn't have a CHOICE. By D'Rek requesting her consent is simply giving Kira the illusion of control. Because the book flops and shows with a degrading scene that strips away everything that he supposedly learned and throws consent out the window.

    2. Kira has Stockholm Syndrome. She fought tooth and nail not to be taken for breeding. However, trapped in a room for weeks and no real interaction with other beings, she falls in love with him??!! The whole time he is plotting for her to never leave while all they do is have sex until one of them passes out. I just can't see how real love would develop under these circumstances.

On a positive note, I can see they really thought about the world they were trying to set up.
  • I enjoyed the story but I must admit that I am really tired of stories where big problems are settled with sex as if the characters have no brains. Quite frankly for 98% of the book it seemed as tho.sex was the only thing they had in common so it also read a bit shallow to me. I will however give the next book a try.
  • Don’t make me curse in this review but JUNE. ... ok the book is smokeing hot love the characters and the storyline and the language barrier. I am so team Taylor Vaugh! If anybody had any doubts about either of these Authors now is your time to enjoy them both.

  • I received this ARC for an honest review. What if you are a young girl growing up on a struggling earth colony dependent upon the benevolence of an alien race for the survival of your race. A binding condition for their assistance is that every female once they have reached the age of 21 must give herself to a male Xalthurian for the sole purpose of providing them with a male child, who you must surrender to the biological alien father whether you want to or not. Failure to comply could be detrimental to you and the colony.

Enter Kira, a young girl, not yet breeding age, who watches what happens what could happen when one doesn't want to abide by the agreement between the races. She becomes a target for the D'rek the alien leader, who has set his sight on her because of her defiance, when she becomes of age. She is strong willed and when she comes of breeding age, she will go down fighting if she must. It becomes a battle of wills between them and a battle within themselves. I don't want to give too much away and it would be easy to do so. Let's just say that I'm looking forward to more collaboration between authors Theodora Taylor and Eve Vaughn.
